Originally designed for Western Digital internal and external mechanical hard drives, the utility performed a few critical functions:
Quick Test: Ran a rapid self-test built into the drive firmware to look for obvious mechanical problems.
Extended Test: Scanned the entire surface of the hard drive sectors to identify and attempt to repair bad sectors.
Write Zeros: Permanently wiped all data on the drive by overwriting everything with zeros, essentially preparing it like a blank, brand-new drive.
S.M.A.R.T. Reading: Displayed the drive’s built-in self-monitoring health indicators and serial/model numbers. Official Modern Replacements
If you are running a modern operating system like Windows 10 or Windows 11, you should avoid tracking down old versions of Data Lifeguard. Western Digital recommends two current utilities depending on your drive type: Western Digital Product Software Downloads
