Project Mercury was the first human spaceflight program of the United States, running from 1958 through 1963. The phrase “The Seven Men Who Faced the Unknown” captures the harrowing reality of the Mercury Seven, the nation’s original group of military test pilots selected by NASA on April 9, 1959, to determine if humans could survive and work in the uncharted environment of space.

Driven by intense Cold War competition with the Soviet Union, the program successfully executed six crewed missions. It established the operational baseline for all subsequent American space exploration.
